'I'm homeless, the government must house me.' They're casting their problem on society. And, you know, there is no such thing as society. There are individual men and women, and there are families. And no government can do anything except through people, and people must look to themselves first."

I'd have thought that there's a lot in there that a libertarian would agree with.
Do not the "individual men and women" and "families" collectively comprise society?

It was silly to say "there is no such thing as society" and untrue to say "no government can do anything except through people"! Her government and succeeding governments have managed to enmesh us in the EU other than "through [the] people"!

My guess is that she really wanted to say: "people must look to themselves first" but succumbed to advice to damp it down a bit! In the event, that was really bad advice and, as executed, served to make her message more (and unduly) harsh.

Would be good to have a real Conservative government with a Libertarian opposition much like the 19th century when this country was at its best.

Funny how these politicians who wax lyrical about 'less government' never say anything about reducing their pay in consequence!

We know that ordinary MPs' jobs are already part-time by the extra-mural activities they engage in. There's Anne Widdecombe, Boris Johnson et al appearing on TV programmes such as 'Celebrity Fitness Club' or 'Not the None O'Clock News', writing fiction etc

I think MP's should only receive the average wage with basic accomadation and a small office at Westminster.
No expenses etc.

MP's should not be in it for the money but to serve their country.

I sincerely believe that Anne Widdecombe is one of these.

She has spoke out against cutting Mp's wages before.

I'm not a regular reader of anarcho-syndicalist literature, but I did see one of their stickers on a lamp-post the other day, and it made an impression. The top half was a cartoon of a big fish chasing a small fish and trying to swallow it. The bottom half showed the big fish being chased by a whole school of small fish swimming in formation in the shape of an even bigger fish.

I think the Libertarian Party, the Liberals, UKIP, One London, the EDs, we could be that swarm of little fish - and then look out Labour!
