I scored 45.
See if you can get them all. 48 Counties of England Quiz — An Online Game Clue...one of them is 'City of London', which is too small to be on the map.

The list does not represent all that we call counties or that most people see and recognise as counties.
For instance (just one example), it is claimed that Bristol is a county. You'd have to look long and hard to find anyone in the country who regards Bristol as a county in the same way that Kent or Shropshire are. Whatever the article on Wikipedia says, the fact is Bristol is a city which is a part of the ancient county of Somerset. They once called the area Bristol was in "the County of Avon" (i.e. an invention of the europhile Heath) and now they are trying again to call Bristol a county. Bristol not a county in its own right - is an important British city within Somerset (even if it is not officially represented at this time on Somerset County Council). Also, the test (or "game" as it appears to call itself) is not fair in that I put in correct answers which it refused to accept. It then told me after the "game" was over that I had not included some answers (which I had, in fact, typed in). |

The quiz clearly makes the distinction between ceremonial and historic counties.
I'm from Somerset, I wouldn't want Bristol to be in Somerset, it would drag the rest of the county down somewhat.

Frankly, I'm not sure what is the distinction between ceremonial and historic counties of England? Indeed, 'historic' begs the question of which period in history? Moreover, I'm not sure the exercise has any useful purpose unless it serves to bring to attention the previous existence of counties such as Cumberland, Northumberland, Westmorland, Huntingdonshire (Oliver Cromwell's county!) and, of course, Rutland . . . later restored. Yorkshire once comprised three Ridings (East, West and North) with the North extending to and including Darlington and Middlesborough. England was arbitrarily and insensitively hacked around by the dictatorial Heath Government which included such authoritarians as Douglas-Home, Hesletine and Walker with the Local Government Act 1972. Then, Wales was far more prominent in British affairs than it is now and that, to some extent, explains the hiving off of the English county of Monmouthshire and attaching it to Wales in yet another dirty deal between Conservative & Labour MPs which excluded any direct consultation with the communities affected. (The other diry deal was the collaboration of Woy Jenkins & pals with Tory MPs to get the Act joining us to the (then) EEC through Parliament ~ again without any direct consultation with voters!) In any event, this quiz is harmless. So enjoy! ______________________________ |

I don't know, it's mostly things like having North, West and South Yorkshire instead of just 'Yorkshire'.
