No one in the south of England who is about to travel to that county says "I'm off on my holidays to west Yorkshire." They will, quite rightly, say that they are going to Yorkshire. The same applies for Sussex - there is one big Sussex (not two called 'East' and 'West' Sussex). |

That's probably because you know the proper names of England's counties and not all these new names like 'west' Yorkshire and 'east' Sussex.
You will know only Yorkshire and Sussex. Like me, you probably do not recognise the City of Bristol as a county (as the quiz claims it is). Other parts of the UK have suffered too with these artificial names - such as Wales where Glamorgan has been split into three and where the new name of Powys has appeared replacing the names of ancient counties which had been on the map of Wales for many centuries. Heath, the europhile 'Conservative' Prime Minister, is to blame for all of this. |

Yes,Heath did it and his Conservatives are still intent of carrying out his plans against thie country and its people, regardless of what they say.
We have stopped saying the above recently,we need to start doing it againbut more often and much louder. THE CONSERVATIVE PARTY ARE GENERALLY PRO-EUROPEAN UNION. |

One of the problems has been Royal mail's rapid adoption of the new admin areas for use in its postal code system. Who now includes the relevant county (traditional, ceremonial or otherwise) in correspondence going from one 'admin' area to another? If everyone in London and Middlesex and Surrey started to include the relevant county, especially when communicating with others outwith the south east of England, it might help. Even the EDP (yes, you know who) doesn't seem to know what the counties were pre- 1972: English Democrats Party:: News blog No Cumberland, Westmorland, or Huntingdonshire [home of Ollie Cromwell] mentioned! ![]() _________________________________ |

I note that just before last Christmas the post office agreed to start using 'Rutland' in addresses again now that the county of Rutland (which the europhile Heath put in Leicestershire in 1974) has been re-established. The postcode system in this country should be based on the county people reside in. For instance, people often live in a postcode area which is actually based/centred on the neighbouring county (one example being north-west Derbyshire being under the Stockport, Lancashire 'SK' postcode network). It would be much simpler if we have postcodes which did not cross county boundaries. I would like to see a very straightforward postcode system in which places like Derby would become 'Derbyshire 1' or 'Derbyshire 2' and where Hastings would be 'Sussex 3' and 'Sussex 4'. There may have to be additional prefixes to those for the precise area of the postcode district (i.e. Sussex 1 - 148) but the main point is that postcodes would be based on counties and that postcode numbering networks would not cross county boundaries. Such a system would be easier for the post office; easier for the public and it would strengthen our county identity. Last edited by Britannist; 11-01-2008 at 09:34 PM. |
