The New Party started off in Scotland. The Scottish Progressives are a non-Nationalist free enterprise party, it seems. The trouble with Scottish devolution is that it was all done Blair style. Blair was not seen as "being one of us", that is the Scottish Labour ascendency. Blair went to Fettes and Oxford, they all went to Scottish high schools and Scottish universities!

Devolution has almost destroyed the Tory party in Scotland. there is a minnow offshoot, the Scottish Unionist Party. But the business brigade are setting up their own parties. The Scottish Progressives is one of them.

Also in the running is the Scottish Enterprise Party, but my guess is that the progressives will win the day!

I think the future of Scotland will be, politically -

Scottish Labour Party (much reduced)
Scottish Socialist Party (increased)
Scottish Enterprise Party
Scottish Green Party
Scottish Liberal Democrats
Scottish National Party

Flapping around in second (or third!) division will be -

UKIP
BNP
Scottish Conservatives
Scottish Independence Party
Scottish Unionist Party
Scottish Senior Citizens Party.


I don't think this means an end to the Union necessarily. Most of these parties are more or less pro-union. I think that the Conservative party is no longer the natural party of the Union, and will become an irrelevance in Scotland. In England? That's a different matter.

The Tories could do a German style co-operation. Like the CDU/CSU (the CSU being the catholic party in Bavaria), they could have a Con/Prog link-up.

Politics in the UK now is a bit like the train schedule at New Street Station! Virgin parties overtaking the ramshackle outfits still on the track.
