I don't know a single person who doesn't call it 'Somerset' - and I was born there!

Edit: Also, isn't 'Devonshire' an entirely artificial invention?

Hampshire was known as Southamptonshire.

Having never looked at an encyclopedia from 1911, that'll be why. You find me an inhabitant of Somerset who calls it Somersetshire. I don't know of a single person who does, whether they be from Taunton, Yeovil, Frome, Nailsea, Bridgewater, Minehead, Bath, Street...

I'll give you Devonshire, but as with 'Somersetshire', it's not in modern usage.

Good to see Rutland (shire)

on the list (in the first posting to this thread).

I read the other week that the Post Office has finally agreed to restore the Rutland postal address (the County of Rutland is an ancient English county which europhile Heath tried to destroy with his 1974 local government 'reorganisation' - he put it into the neighbouring county of Leicestershire against the wishes of the people of the county of Rutlandshire).

I've heard the term 'Durhamshire' used before now - although the County of Durham is mostly called Durham or County Durham these days.
