The most extensive opinion poll for some time on the views of the people of England on the Union of the UK is published this morning in the Sunday Telegraph - at the start of the Daily Telegraph's "Call yourself British" campaign.
The poll was carried out by ICM. Main findings in the opinion poll: * Over 6 out of every 10 English people regard feel British. * 69% of English people want the Union of England with Scotland to go on. * 48% of English people think that the UK will survive for no more than 25 years. * 59% of those English people quizzed by ICM believe that the Union of the UK will cease to exist in 50 years (or less). * 18% of English people think that the UK will last indefinitely. * 57% of English people back the establishment of a UK football team (34% oppose this idea). * 62% of English people questioned by ICM say that Scottish constituency MPs must not vote on English and Welsh legislation before the House of Commons. * 63% of English people think that higher public spending in Scotland than in England is not justifiable. * 59% of English people would call themselves English if ask to by a foreigner - 37% would sa that they were British. * 27% of voters think that the Conservatives are more likely than the Labour Party to stand up for the people of England than the Labour Party is - 10% think that the Labour Party is more likely to defend English interests than the Conservatives would. |

Do you call yourselves British?:
“Less than a fifth (of the people of England) feel 'English, not British' reveals an ICM poll for the Sunday Telegraph (9.12.2007) to mark 300 years of the Acts of Union. Asked to choose between independence, an English Parliament within the Union or the status quo, just 15% of those polled preferred independence and only 20% a new English parliament.” Above edited extract from today's Sunday Telegraph: Do you call yourself British? - Telegraph Call yourselves British campaign: Call Yourself British - Telegraph Wither the Scots-English Union?: Analysis: Wither the English-Scots union? - Telegraph Hold fast to Union that makes the UK great: Hold fast to Union that makes Britain great - Telegraph What is the ideal relationship between Scotland and England?: What is the ideal relationship between Scotland and England? - Telegraph Union Jack (Union Flag) should include Welsh flag says Welsh Labour MP: Union Jack should include Welsh flag, says MP - Telegraph The Union of England with Scotland is over claims Simon Heffer: The Union of England and Scotland is over - Telegraph |

For once, I am very sceptical about these results. I suspect that the polling techniques employed are not sufficient to arrive at a credible result.
There is a huge difference between the 'English' and the 'people of England' - even more with the huge influx of foreigners and huge number of 'first born' Brits. Also, it looks as though Brown's 'Britishness' campaign in England is having an effect. Results published a year ago in The Sunday telegraph were radically different! Two important findings in the poll quoted in the first posting to this thread are:
62% of English people questioned by ICM say that Scottish constituency MPs must not vote on English and Welsh legislation before the House of Commons. 63% of English people think that higher public spending in Scotland than in England is not justifiable. So, the majority of those questioned in England by ICM support the Union of the UK - but want English control over specifically English matters before the House of Commons. In other words, they support the principle of equality for England with Scotland in the UK. |

Don't we all. I would bet even a majority of Scots would want that. Its the scum in power that don't and there are strategic reasons why not.
They want disunity. They want us at each others throat. The fact these are the same people who are selling us out to European Union should be ringing a large alarm bell to us all. Sadly some people decide to hate the Scots and dance to their tune instead.

The polls shows that 60+% is a consistent percentage for contitutional change for English Legislation.
The "result" varies between 60-70% depending upon exactly how the question is asked.
