The capital has some of the most deprived parts of the UK (as Ranter points out above) but still has to subsidise some other parts of the UK (as well as pay far more into the EU than it gets back - billions every year).

Yes, but what is wrong with that? The whole point of a Union is that we are all in this together. Anyway, if this 'argument' was taken to its logical conclusion then those who follow this line would be advocating an 'independent' state of the South East and sod the rest of England let alone Britain.
