Default King Alfred

October 26th is the feast or black letter day of King Alfred the Great. So on King Alfred's Day and in memory of him, without whom our England would never have come into existence, I wish you all a very happy King Alfred's Day on this 1080th anniversary of England's Nations Statehood!

What a great post! Please will you join me in a campaign to bring Alfred's remarkable achivements more to England's notice.

Shall we campaign for a public holiday in his honour?

Alfred the Great came in at 14th on the BBC's list of 100 Great Britons, along with the likes of Julie Andrews and Johnny Rotten!

BBC NEWS | Entertainment | TV and Radio | 100 great British heroes

Alfred was a great proponent of legal systems (our Common Law probably stems from his activities) and he approved of education as a tool for advancement. He should be around today!

He was King of the West Saxons, but was keen on the kingdoms uniting. More Wessex than English, but nevertheless a good egg (if not necessarily a good cook!)
