I believe that leaving is still the best option - but what will the EU make the cost of leaving be? |

Trade Barriers cuts both ways.
The Germans would hate not being able to sell their Beemers, Mercs and Hitler Wagens to us. Likewise for the French and Italian car manufacturers. I expect other Continental firms would be affected as well. Never listen to the nonsense that the EU would [or could] punish US if we get out. Last edited by Populist Lee; 23-09-2007 at 03:32 PM. |

If we do so much trade with the other EU states then surely if we left they wouldn't want to cut off their nose to spite their face

Indeed.
If the Commission tried to institute a trade-punishment regime with an independent UK, all those Continental companies will kick up one heck of a fuss. Hence my comment about "hate not being able to sell . . ." |

That's why I think UKIP's stance is not Euro-realist at all. It gives those with a heart before head approach the wrong idea. Far better to join up with like-minded groups across the EU and put a concerted effort into dismantling the United States of Europe. Look at it another way. The Greens are a pan-European grouping. All Green parties sign up to a common EU Election programme. What if there were UKIP type parties across Europe ALL standing on a common EU Election programme. That would be progress. Then UKIP could either go for what NF calls "the Europe we thought we were signing up for" or a complete dismantling of the whole thing and everyone goes their separate ways, with all the interesting problems that might cause. I favour what the Liberal Party has now watered down. A Commonwealth of Europe which neither interferes with nation states nor imposes unnecessary regulations. A Europe, though, that comes together to safeguard the environment, travel, and economic prosperity. |

There might just be a Yorkshire Party, Cassie. Local Tories have warned David Cameron they will form their own breakaway northern party if he does not shape up.

[quote=Smidgey;426075]I agree, but one of my major fears is, upon leaving the EU, will the EU be kind towards Britain? Will it set up trade barriers on British goods and so forth?
QUOTE] That is a worry that I share. But so many "British" companies are controlled from Europe that it may prove counter productive for some countries. |
