Default Wychavon DC (Evesham South ward) 18th Feb

Due to the death of the sitting Conservative councillor (R. Cartwright), there is a byelection today for the Evesham South ward on Wychavon District Council in Worcestershire.

    The candidates are:

    Diana Brown (Liberal Democrats)
    Gerry O'Donnell (Conservative Party)
    John White (UK Independence Party)

John White is also standing for a seat on Evesham Town Council which was also held by the late Mr Cartwright.

UKIP have slipped back a little in this poll. In percentage terms the Tory vote has remained about the same but UKIP has pretty much swapped places with the LibDems.

I saw a LibDem poster on another board yesterday claiming that they were running neck and neck with the Tories, and that it was going to be a really tight race between the two. Plainly that was wishful thinking by them (at best), but it is a fairly standard LibDem tactic to make that sort of claim.

Shuan hasn't quite get the 2007 results correct. The result was actually as follows

    Con 676/591
    UKIP 334
    LibDem 312

You see there were two seats up for grabs. Any one not wishing to vote Tory would have had to vote UKIP and Lib Dem if they wanted to use both of their votes. Furthermore some UKIP sympathetic Tories would have given us one of their votes.

So our result this time is not as bad as it first seems.

    The Town Council vote was:

Charles Homer, Conservative Party, 432 votes (Elected)
John White, UK Independence Party, 217 votes

    25 ballots spoiled
Considering the very strong personal vote for Mr Cartwright it is a bit disappointing UKIP didn't do a bit better in the town vote though I don't think a win was ever on the cards. But I think it is not unreasonable to extrapolate from both results that the UKIP candidate received a good number of votes from persons who voted LibDem in the district election. Perhaps a few dozen though of course I'm not on the ground to know for sure. I hope UKIP central take note.

I think that the Greens have also been sliding as well as UKIP and the BNP.

    You're quite right.

I think it's fair to say that all things considered the UKIP percentage is roughly what it was in 2007,or a little less.
