I will not be signing your petition. I think there are too many laws, rules and regulations as it is without adding more. There are some 12 year olds I would be happy to leave on their own, or even in charge of younger siblings. Alternatively there are some 21 year olds I wouldn't leave in charge of themselves!
Arbitrary age rules are none sense in my opinion. I would for example remove the rules on drinking alcohol in pubs. Let people decide for themselves if they are mature enough to drink. However, I would massively increase the penalties for being drunk and disorderly in public since anyone getting themselves into that state is obviously not mature enough to handle alcohol regardless of how old they are. |

REPLY: Agreed. With over one million A & E admissions a year for alcohol-related injuries - and all the associated ills that accompany heavy and uncontrolled drinking - the failure to enforce 'drunk and disorderly' legislation is scandalous. I think a sufficient penalty might be 48 hours in the police cells. If a blood test proved a certain level of alcohol in the blood, then it would be an automatic and recordable criminal offence. On a second or third offence, compulsory referral to a secure alcohol rehabilitation centre would be appropriate. ------ P.S. Do you have a better solution for stopping so many young children being left on their own? ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Last edited by Tony Bennett; 06-04-2008 at 06:28 PM. |

I've signed it but think perhaps 13 years old would have been better.
Never the less,a good move on your behalf, well done and good luck with it. I hope more viewers from this site will sign up to the petition soon. |

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ At the annual world space exploration summit, the delegates from each country were comparing past achievments and future plans, The russians said "in one month we will send our third space station into orbit." The americans said , "well we will be sending our 20 th space shuttle to the moon next week", The chinese said "we send our 3rd mars probe off in 3 days time". The irish delegate stood up and said" tomorow we will be sending our first rocketship to the sun". The other delegates looked at each other ,and the american said ,"that can't be done ,you'll burn up". "We have thought of that" said paddy, "we're going at night" ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ +++++++ There are already more laws on the statue books than we can ever enforce. People just need to take responsibility for their own actions. |

There is, currently, no minimum age listed in legislation at which children can be left alone. However, it is expected that parents understand that children need to be of an age to cope without parental supervision in specific circumstances. Parents can be charged and prosecuted already if they leave children under 12 without adequate supervision if that prosecution is deemed the correct action. Children can be removed from parental control if that is deemed the correct response to their being left without adequate supervision. There is no requirement for a new law in this area.

That's what I like, or don't, about this forum! The threads supposed to be about minor parties in by-elections!!!
By the way, PopularAlliance did OK on its first or second outing!

I completely agree with you on this, arden. TB originally posted the list (and I read it almost as soon as he posted it). He then went back to promote his latest little knee-jerk petition. I think less of him for that.
