UK economic activity shrank by 0.2% in the last three months of last year according to official figures.
It marks a sharp drop in economic activity from the third quarter of 2011, when gross domestic product (gdp) expanded by 0.6%.
The figures, from the Office for National Statistics (ONS), are a preliminary estimate, which could be revised either up or down by 0.2%.
The ONS figures also show that the economy grew by 0.9% during 2011.

David Cameron's economic policy is to give all the big manufacturing contracts to Germany, and crumbs from the table to companies like Bombardier.
We must give David Cameron time to see if this new economic policy works and creates growth here in Britain.

And also to cut science and technology funding in real terms whilst our German neighbours are increasing it. Trying to work the logic out of that one when he told us he wanted a more balanced economy with a reduced reliance on the service sector... Meanwhile we are dumping huge sums of money reorganising an NHS that doesn't appear to need a great deal more than a few tweaks.
He's had time. It's not working and it's time he swallowed his pride and did as he should have done in the first place and brought in Plan B, cut less drastically and invest in construction to provide jobs and homes.
We will never get out of this mess by making people unemployed. Change jobs yes,no jobs - no.
