Default Labour criticised for calling Crewe By-Election before Mrs. Dunwoody's funeral

Labour have allegedly called (i.e. moved The Writ for) the Parliamentary By-Election at Crewe-Nantwich before the funeral of the constituency's MP Mrs. Gwyneth Dunwoody has even been held.

It is thought that this is the first time a Parliamentary By-Election has been called before the funeral of the MP whose death had caused the By-Election had taken place.

Labour are 14% behind the Conservatives in a national opinion poll published in today's Independent newspaper.

The Late and much-missed Mrs. Gwyneth Dunwoody was hugely popular in her constituency and on both sides of the House of Commons. She was eurosceptic, critical of the Blair regime and opposed to the absurdness of political correctness.

It was suggested in a posting to the blog of former Conservative General Election candidate Mr. Iain Dale that Mrs. Dunwoody's daughter Tamsin might allegedly apply to be Labour candidate in the coming By-Election.

Anonymous wrote on Iain Dale's blog on 29.4.2008 at 6.48 pm "I have no doubt that Gwyneth would want her daughter to take over from her. Equally, I am sure that Tamsin would put herself forward knowing that it would be what her mum would want. It is up to the rest of us to hold back and be respectful and give Tamsin some time to grieve before jumping in with both feet. Labour to hold."

Anonymous also wrote on the Iain Dale blog at 8.19 pm on 29.4.2008 (extract) "The funeral (of The Late Mrs. Gwyneth Dunwoody) is some time off because it's being held in London at the family's wishes, so that Parliamentarians and others can attend. It takes a bit of time to arrange such a thing. If the family are happy, which they claim to be, with the date, then you're just playing punch and judy politics, where the Whips are not."

Mr. Iain Dale wrote on his blog on 29.4.2008 “I can hardly believe this. Gwyneth Dunwoody hasn't even been buried yet, but the Labour whips are tabling the writ for the Crewe & Nantwich by-election tomorrow, and it will be held on 22nd May. Gwyneth's funeral isn't until next Thursday, 8 May. It's unprecedented to call a By-Election before the funeral of the previous MP has taken place."

More on this on the Iain Dale blog in the section dated 29.4.2008 (in an article titled "Labour Shame Over Crewe & Nantwich By-Election"):

Default The Late Mrs. Gwyneth Dunwoody MP, Crewe-Nantwich

Andrew Pierce, political editor of the Daily Telegraph said on Nick Ferrari's programme on LBC FM (London independent news radio) at 8.39 am on 7.5.2008 "There are two big icebergs on the horizon for Gordon Brown - the Crewe-Nantwich By-Election (22.5.2008) and the 42 days' detention vote."

Labour have been clever in putting up the daughter of The Late Mrs. Gwyneth Dunwoody MP as their candidate in the constituency of Crewe-Nantwich (held by the principled and popular eurosceptic Gwyneth Dunwoody until her death last month), Mr. Pierce said. "They have called the Parliamentary By-Election quickly and the Dunwoody name is big and popular in Crewe-Nantwich."
