Default "Livingstone gets biggest opinion poll lead in 2008 Mayoral campaign so far" (claim)

Europhile UKIP-hating leftist former Labour MP Livingstone is 6% ahead of Conservative Boris Johnson MP in the campaign for the London Mayoralty according to a new opinion poll by IPSOS/MORI for the trade union Unison.

Trade union leaderships usually back the Labour Party and most trade unions are formally allied to the Labour Party.

The IPSPS/MORI opinion poll - the results of which are published in today's Guardian - gives Livingstone his biggest projected lead so far in an opinion poll during this year's London Mayoral election campaign.

The London Mayoral and Assembly elections take place next Thursday (1.5.2008).

IPSOS/MORI opinion poll figures (Guardian 26.4.2008):

First preference votes (opinion poll projection):

Labour (Livingstone) 41%
Conservative (Boris Johnson MP) 38%
Liberal 'Democrats' (Paddick) 12%

After second preference votes have been distributed (opinion poll projection):

Livingstone 53%
Boris Johnson MP 47%

* The Guardian says that some of those questioned for the opinion poll are not on the electoral register and the Livingstone projected lead in second preference votes over his Conservative rival Boris Johnson MP would fall from 6% to 4% if those people were not included.

The results of a national opinion poll lead were published earlier this week giving the Conservatives an 18% lead.
