Is David Cameron all style and no substance?

David Cameron opened the Conservative Party conference yesterday with a defiant speech calling for a more green and family-friendly style of government, and rejecting growing demands from the right to promise tax cuts at the next election.

Yet despite Mr Cameron’s optimism and growing public disillusionment with New Labour, the Conservatives have not made much progress in the opinion polls.

Why do you think the Tories are not performing better? Do you think Mr Cameron is all style and no substance?

Would a return to traditional Tory policies, such as reducing the burden of taxation, boost their popularity?

Mr Cameron is arguably more media-savvy than his predecessors, organising everything from a photo shoot on a glacier to a webcam showing him washing up at home. Do you think such tactics help or hinder the Conservatives?

Wow ! Does Little Boy Blu ever get a slagging or what ! And this from the Torygraph blogg.

"Can't talk about the EU, can't talk about immigration, can't talk about tax" Camoron is not going down well on his home turf.

I reckon UKIP will be picking up few (or more than a few) disaffected Tory voters if this goes on.

David Cameron told the BBC Radio Four ‘Today’ programme in early October (during the period of the 2006 Conservative Party conference) “We're not banging on about europe in this Party… we're talking about things that people really care about…”

Britannist writes: The issues people "really care about" include sovereignty - it's still in the top ten of issues according to most opinion polls. If the Conservative Party goes silent on the EU issue people will give their vote to UKIP. The Conservative MP Michael Fallon is the latest MP to say as much (yesterday).

Labour has dropped 8% on its 1997 General Election vote share. Of that the Conservatives appear to have (according to ICM in the Sunday Mirror this week) 3% - with most of the other 5% going to UKIP (UKIP are now on 4% according to an opinion poll published about a week ago).
