Default Is there a Cameron deal with French minister asks Tory MEP

Martin Callanan, the strongly euroceptic Conservative member of the EU 'Parliament' (who represents the north-east of England 'constituency') is asking what, if anything, the anti-UKIP and pro-EU Conservative leader David Cameron has promised Nicolas Sarkozy to get him to send a video message to the 2006 Conservative Conference this week at Bournemouth.

Europhile Mr. Sarkozy is the most likely candidate 'of the right' to succeed President Chirac who is expected to stand down just before the 2007 French Presidential electiion.

Did you see Camerons speech yesterday?

As usual zero substance, though his stuff on Social responsibility struck a chord with me (IE encouraging people to look after themselves and their communities rather than relying on Big Brother like some of the cattle want around here).

However, as usual he didn't explain how he would overide the commands passed down from central control (the EU).

Indeed, he was nothing but positive about the EU in the very brief time he spoke on it.

First he said talking about Europe (he means the EU) was not relevant to people and make them look out of touch. Maybe banging on about it all the time, but not the miniscule amount of time they have spent on it of late.

Then he went on to praise his MEPs for voting to ban dangerous chemicals. Why he thinks they are better placed to do it, than our own MP's he didn't explain.

The man is Blair 2. I'll never vote for him or his party again.

Yes I did watch it actually. I thought it went on too long. He repeated some points several times (the bits about social responsibility) which is not a good idea.

I noticed that when he said proudly that Conservative MEPs would be voting in the EU 'Parliament' next week to ban dangerous chemicals, he paused (normally done by the speech-maker when s/he wants applause) and there then followed a period of total silence followed by light and unenthusiastic applause. The very name of the EU and/or EU 'Parliament' is unpopular in this country, and in the Conservative Party. David Cameron does not appear to realise this.

After the speech, the BBC reporter Carol Walker (on BBC News 24 Television) walked around outside the main conference hall asking delegates what they thought of the speech. I noticed that a couple of people she picked at random to ask their opinion refused to give it and sounded annoyed (either at her or the Cameron speech or both). She said "Clearly not everyone here is happy with the speech". And she's right - I bet not everyone was.

Congratulating Conservative MEPs for backing EU legislation and using terminology like "we banged on about europe too much" (as MKP says above) was wrong.

David Cameron - pro-EU by instinct and (as we saw earlier this year) very hostile to UKIP which many Conservatives vote for in EU elections - hasn't the foggiest idea that the overwhelming majority of Conservative members rightly are strongly eurosceptic and, as polls have shown, many want out of the EU.
