..but Clippo was having a joke against somebody who had used sarcasm against him. We do need to loosen up at times. Direct swearing and cursing insults or libellous comments are clearly out of order, but so is trolling around other people's posts looking for insults where none were intended.

If I call mkpd a git that is clearly out of order, no matter whether I think he is or not, but if I state that mkpd's arguments are fatuous, lack intellectual authority, are based on a disingenuous approach to argument and contain logical fallacies whilst his invective has descended to playground level then surely I am merely articulating my opinions in a cogent and sentient fashion deprived of the cheap and base insults that have abounded on this forum in the past. I could hardly be called insulting, could I?

Matt, you only don't see it as light hearted banter because, reversing your argument, you disagree with Clippo. If Clippo was to respond with the wittiest put down conceivable you'd still view it as an insult because you don't want to be friends.

Obviously Clippo will never attain my level of wit and repartee, but surely he's allowed to try without being reported to the mods.

I don't actually know who I agree with on MMGW because I don't have time to read all of the posts and, for some reason, the hard evidence is largely only coming from one direction. Matt, you might well be right that MMGW is a fraud perpetuated by people with a vested interest, but I don't believe the 'research' papers funded by the oil companies that show them to be non-polluting paragons of virtue. I suspect none of us will ever be able to understand the whole picture and I think the world's population growth will do more harm to the environment in other ways such that MMGW, if true, will end up in second place in the order of environmenttal debates. I'm staying neutral in the MMGW debate, but with a healthy dose of scepticism towards both sides.

My view is that, if MMGW is the threat the government believes it to be they would set an example that we can all follow. International meetings would be done by Internet conferences, private flights to far off shopping destinations and nice restaurants would become a thing of the past and we would stop importing food by air. When Blair said he wouldn't forego his foreign holidays and speechmaking jollies (several a year) I knew that he had never believed a single word he had spoken on saving the planet and therefore there was no reason for me to forego the luxuries that Cherie Blair enjoys.

I do think that there's been a veritable smorgasbord of insults recently, coming from both sides of the debate, but even so there is little excuse.

However, one thing that should be distinguished between are attacks on the man and then attacks on the information posted.

It does no-one harm to claim that someone's information is a load of rubbish - certainly I would not be hurt if someone claimed that the graphs I post are trash, rubbish or even an obscenity, although I would want to know why they felt so - but it potentially causes quite a lot of emotional harm and even, in this day and age when googling a prospective employee is a more normal thing to do, actual harm, particularly regarding job prospects, to insult the person themselves.

Of course, even then this is not condoning such attacks on what is posted - it is far better for all, and more conducive to intellectual debate, to refrain from insulting anything (whether it be the man or the information) and instead concentrate on actually, well, debating, the thrust and counter-thrust of evidence and hard data, preferably without the constant accusations of, essentially, 'conspiracy!' that come oh-so-often from both sides.

On that note, to those proponents to whom it applies: oil companies are not behind every bit of contrary data.

To those sceptics to whom it applies: despite what you may think, there is not a global conspiracy to raise taxes and increase control in the name of global warming. There are idiocies as politicians, collectively not the sharpest knives in the drawer, panic, but no malicious intent behind it.
