I totally agree with you - the need for small businesses is important - people should be prepared to pay a little bit extra if it ensures healthy competition, e.g. before they shop at Tesco to save a few pence.

Well at least we still live in a free open market society.
I've come to the conclusion from looking at the experiences of others in the same predicament that most small businesses are purposely crushed by various forces combined and those that aren't are requested to sell out to bigger groups (an offer you aren't expected to refuse).

You can't compete for merchandise buying. If you buy specialist merchandise or designer or hand crafted or whatever to be out of the department store and supermarket bracket you get hammered with gigantic rentals and can't sell enough to make your existence worthwhile. Because you can't buy in bulk you die.

If you hit on a novel idea and start a small enterprise some really big noise notices you are doing well and standing on the brink of the franchise market, but in the small business league, so this entity will buy you out or use its capital to start up in opposition to you. You sell out if you have any brains. You learn not to care about what you've made or loved and end up incredibly p*ssed off.

Yes indeed - I totally agree.

You see Frith, I know you're quick to label things as "conspiracy theory" but when it happens at a personal level, it is quite real and believable, don't you agree ?

You see I'm on the side of liberty and freedom - the little guy fighting against the big brutal system that want's everything for themselves.

Impossible! My wife had a small general store, a Tesco popped up half a mile away selling the same goods , but for less than my wife could buy them!

exactly - you may as well roll up your magic carpet and fly away when that happens. I would like to get rich enough to get on the inside and then make it possible for the little guys to get their businesses back through me. But the cosmic jester knows what I want and so he has made quite sure that I never get that rich. I am always on the lookout for a gap in his armour though and if I find one I'm going in ...

I understand it's difficult, almost impossible.

All we can do is exercise our decisions as consumers not to give into big business, but more impotantly, educate others about the choices they make, and the repurcussions of those choices.
