Most of them are, but I still check the folder as it often chucks things in that shouldn't be there and I still get spam into my main mailbox even using the highest settings. In short, spam filters aren't worth bothering with most of the time.

Yes and No. Good for short term. When you have 10,000 filtered and 500 not, you still have to wade through them.

They spam you domain. I didn't try to work it out, but the spammers alias your account / domain, sending out spam which is rejected by other firewalls and comes back to you. The originator spams twice for every one sent out.

IanC,

They do not alias your domain. They send out spam your email address as a return address.

Alex

I get roughly 2000, yes 2000, spam emails every day, often a lot more. Nearly all of them get caught by the spam filter, but it takes a while to download them all.

Count yourself lucky Tony, I get 2000-5000 each day.
Oddly enough, Saturday is the day I get least.

About bounce spam (or backscatter, as it's known)...

Send a message to yourself. Figure out the format of a valid message ID for your system.

All legit bounces should contain this message ID somewhere.
Bounce any returns which don't contain a return ID conforming to it.

About normal spam...

Run your own email server. Use rDNS lookups and RBLs and the spam will go away. Except for some messages sent by people using "The Bat!" client. Filter on x-mailer.

Ta da! No spam.

Most people don't run their own mail server though, John.
