Isn't there some sort of filter on names? The latest user as of this post (SexWoman) would be a good example of why one is required.
At least don't allow this person.

They're not allowed to post; but we can't prevent all the spambots from posting. Not yet, anyway.

I was aware of both of those things (the second one especially; have you seen comments on the first post of my blog after the few serious? ); I was just curious as to whether or not there was a filter on names as there is on swearing in posts.

Theoretically, yes, but in practice it doesn't actually seem to work. I've snooped around in the guts of the forum code and it should work, but doesn't. Probably a dodgy regexen somewhere (regex is basically pattern recognition, in case you didn't know.)

Well, at least I know the answer now.
I didn't know what regex was, by the way; does this reflect badly on me, bearing in mind that I profess to be a fairly talented programmer?

Well it certainly wouldn't harm you to learn them

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regular_expression

Looks difficult (to a lot of people) but is actually dead simple, and a great tool in your toolbox. Much more efficient than a zillion if-else loops

One could use a switch statement instead.

Regex could be more efficient for anything even slightly complex. It's always a trade-off.

Hmmm... Reading that article, I'd say you're correct. Switch statements, whilst more elegant than hundreds of if/else statements, do look to be much less efficient in the vast majority of cases.
I may have to study them a bit more... They could come in useful.
