Default Bill Cash, EU Constitution Lisbon 'Treaty', referendum, Irish, eurosceptic

Bill Cash, the eurosceptic Conservative MP, told the BBC Television News channel at 4.49 pm on 13.6.2008 "I am absolutely delighted (at the news that the Irish people have rejected the EU Constitution Lisbon 'Treaty'). I wanted a referendum on the EU Maastricht 'Treaty' and 750, 000 people signed a petition calling for one. The EU has tried to cheat the people of europe by ignoring the EU Constitution No votes in the French and Dutch referendums. This (EU Constitution Lisbon 'Treaty') has to be approved by all 27 EU member states. Brown (Prime Minister) must come to the House of Commons on Monday and withdraw the 'Treaty'. This gives David Cameron (Conservative leader) a golden opportunity. European Government no - European trade Yes. The literature in the Irish No to the 'Treaty' campaign was quite clear. We (here in the UK) have been cheated out of a referendum by this Government which promised one. Other nations in the EU have been cheated out of a referendum too. The EU elite are denying people the chance to speak their mind in the way one would expect people to be allowed to speak in a proper democracy."

The elites in Brussels have got to listen to people who do not want endless powers transferred to Brussels and endless EU Treaties. Brown (Prime Minister) must now stop pushing this 'Treaty' through - it is the height of arrogance for him to push the 'Treaty' through. If he persists he must explain why. We must have a referendum so we can put the final nail in the coffin of this 'Treaty'. (End of quote)

Don't we all love Tory hypocrisy? The CONServatives are only making a song and dance about all this because they know Mr Brown will continue with the ratification process and they want to ensure Labour receives the blame from the British people for doing that and they fully expect the ratification process to be completed before Labour calls the next general election. They WON'T promise the people of this country a post-ratification referendum and risk the EU throwing Britain out of the EU but they are happy for Labour to pick-up the can of unpopularity. They make me sick. It is thanks to them we are in this predicament. I don't remember ANY Tory government giving us a referendum on the Common Market/EEC/EU!

Default Denis MacShane, europhile Labour MP, EU Constitution Lisbon 'Treaty', Irish

Denis MacShane, europhile Labour MP and sacked ‘Europe’ Minister, told the BBC Television News Channel at 5.21 pm on 13.6.2008 (regarding the Irish No vote in the referendum of 12.6.2008 on the EU Constitution Lisbon ‘Treaty’): “They (the No to the 'Treaty' campaign) ran an efficient campaign and gave the Irish political elite a good kicking. We are in a mess. We are in a pickle. We must now tread water – the unraveling of europe would be a disaster.”

This will be resolved. There is precedence in what took place during formation of the United States and that was resolved though it left Texas in a fascinating relationship still with the other States!

It is no more than a hiccup caused by the unwillingness of the governments of a few European countries, especially our own, to “tell it like it is” with regard to what a dreadful mess their countries are in, and the people of those countries therefore failing to realise what the implications of NOT going ahead will be.
