ITV 1 television news have just reported that pro-EU Giles Chichester MEP has just resigned as leader of the Conservative group of MEPs in Brussels. Tom Bradby, ITV news reporter - after being shown on screen telling David Cameron "You need this like a hole in the head" - said "There is no doubt that this has been a bad day for David Cameron - at last, some relief for Gordon Brown":

Not too bad for David Cameron - Radio 4 had soundbites of him being firm and stating that it was up to Chichester to sort the situation out. Very much a "it's his problem, not mine" approach.
By getting Chichester to resign as Tory MEP leader, Cameron's team have done some decent damage limitation. Wait for the "Tough on sleaze, tough on the causes of sleaze" comments in the Tory-supporting papers. |

I actually thinks this comes across quite well for Cameron - if reports that he ordered MEPs to clean up their expenses are accurate.
