Im quite ambivalent to certain statement such as "British culture being eroded" and quite critical for those who link such phenomenon with foreign influx of people.
From what I know Britain decided to deemphasize nuclear family and religion relatively declined long before 1997 when Britain's immigration policy changed. Correct me if Im wrong but I really didn't know people who are discarding the bible for the sake of Koran or speaking a Polish tongue instead of English and I dont know any foreigner or community with such an active agenda.
We wave flag, sadly most of the times for a game of 22 players chasing after the ball. Beer and football are nothing recent have stayed quite long enough with us. As a matter of fact people are watching Hollywood films more often than discussing literature. It's quite ironic some people now need to pretend that commercial items such as "Narnia" and "Lord of the Rings" are what British Culture means to them. If "Faith, flag and Family" the Cornerstones' motto are what we mean by traditions of British culture, they have been in steady decline long ago. I dont know why some people all the sudden have become so "traditon and British cultural conscious" only when they started to recognise foreign faces on the street or some eye-catching remarks on immigration from Dailymails.
Societies by nature are progressive and hence it does change, and many of the times it changes to the better. However My ambivalence and neutrality ends when what we perceive as law and order are treated with contempt exacerbated by government inefficiency and notebaly "teenage culture".
Parent's house litterally getting raid by the rock n rolls and crazily dressed punkster during "parties" and young people taking drugs are nothing uncommon these days. Some Tories "lament" for the lack of nuclear familes or central left's "anti-family" policies but people with a clear head do know where such "culture" comes from and how it spreads and who behind the scenes support unlimited free-market capitalism.
