Default Cool party: Wessex regionalists.

This is a party I quite like, they are attempting to decentralise gov't in a historic way and are against the EU regionalisation in favour of a decent democratic, British one. If I was to live in Wessex, I think I'd vote for them if they had a candidate in my area.

I must say I have my doubts about some of the areas claimed as Wessex, it is too big in my opinion with Devon and Herefordshire and all Oxfordshire and these are not quite in what could be called the nucleus of Wessez, and I'd still like to see more decentralisation the county and local levels of course but they look good.

I like this statement by the Wessex society.

Moves towards Celtic devolution have inevitably reawakened interest in English identity. It is our belief that England is too large and too diverse to form a single cultural unit. For example, the primarily rural and agricultural region of Wessex has a very different "vibe" to the industrial heartlands of the North. Movements in other parts of England feel the same, and Wessex Society has joined movements in Mercia, Kent and Northumbria to form the Confederation for a Regional England, a loose affiliation of English regional movements.

It is true for Scotland and Wales as well. The Western highlands are almost as different from the North east, or the South West or Fife etc as they are from England.

And this is what the Wessex society has to say about the labour/EU regionalisation and I concur. Historical and meaningful regionalisation and decentralisation can only make us stronger, the EU plan will make us weaker.

More recently, there have been moves towards a reorganisation of England along regional lines. But the government has chosen to adopt a set of artificial and unimaginative regions based on nothing more historical than the civil defence regions adopted during World War II in case Hitler invaded. We believe Wessex has a cultural unity that these regions lack. It has its own flag, its own dialect and more recently its own Earl. More importantly, it has some 1500 years of history behind it. Would Thomas Hardy's novels have had such resonance if they had been set in "the South West"?

Personally I'd say Wessex should be, historically and practically speaking; Hampshire, Dorset, Wiltshire, Berkshire, Gloucestershire and South Gloucestershire, Bath and North East Somerset, Bristol and North Somerset. And perhaps the Isle of White as well. I'd leave out Somerset, Devon and Oxfordshire that they claim. The last two because they mostly don't fit practically and historically and Somerset more because it doesn't fit practically.

The Wessex Regionalists also have a blog: Wessex Regionalists

I'm a rather inactive member of the Wessex Society. The main campaigning at present is getting public buildings to fly the Wyvern and St Aldhelm's Cross on days of significance.

I wish they had more support from people. The English nats for some reason despise these kind of parties.

Not always, I'd be happy to see England as an Independent Kingdom granting powers down to a system set up based on the Hepetachy or something similar. Even if this was just for cultural grounds and the real power was held by the county councils.
I just don't want to see England being destroyed by being hacked into unwanted lumps, English culture and local culture stamped out, and then said lump built over, wrecked and sold off to the EU.

I think Devon (Defanscir) and Somerset (Somersaett) should be part of Wessex as they where traditionally as well just to add to the above. Same modern dialect with local differences; same historical Old English dialect as well as.

Yes many English nats always assume you are talking of the EU regionalisation when you talk of regionalisation whereas most of us genuine regionalists whether from Cornwall, Wessex or any of the historic regions.

As for Devon and Somerset, I leave out Devon for two reasons; firstly it was on the periphery of Wessex like Sussex, Cornwall and half of Mercia became and it wasn't in the very heartland of Wessex and most importantly for the same reason I'd leave out Somerset and Oxfordshire, it would just make Wessex too big. When one is talking about the regionalisation of anywhere you are always forced to balance history with practicality and a Wessex so large, even if the UK were more a confederation with most power at the regional level or lower, it may well unbalancde the situation.

As a *party*, they're not very active.

Their Accounts Submission to the Electoral Commission for 2006 has a credit-debit turnover of less than £100.

Lack of support at the moment I believe although they keep on fighting the good fight. We simply live in a world of giantism and globalism unfortunately and people have forgotten the real virtues of localism and the human scale.
