Conservatives 18% ahead of Labour - biggest Tory opinion poll lead for 21 years

A new YouGov opinion poll published in today's Daily Telegraph puts support for the Conservatives at its highest point since 1987:

Conservatives 44% +4
Labour 26% -3
LIberal Dims 17%
Others 13%

Labour have a lower projected vote share in the opinion poll than their actual vote share at the 1983 General Election which was their worst General Election result for decades.

However, it has to be pointed out that the Cameron-Conservatives have had big opinion poll leads before but those large leads have not, mostly, 'fed through' into extra support for the Cameron-Conservatives in local ward By-Elections held during the time research for the opinion poll was being carried out or soon after its publication). Europhile Neil Kinnock built up big opinion poll leads as leader of the Labour opposition in the years before the 1987 and 1992 General Elections - but went on to lose both.

The 18% national opinion poll lead for the Cameron-Conservatives will be good news for Boris Johnson MP who is the party's candidate in next Thursday's London Mayoral Election.

The europhile Liberal 'Democrats' will be disappointed at being stuck on a 17% projected vote share. They had been hoping that having a new leader would give them an electoral boost.

Support for small parties (a combined 13%) is high in the new YouGov/Telegraph opinion poll.

YouGov interviewed 2073 for today's Telegraph poll on Monday to Wednesday of this week - many of those who took part in the poll will not have heard about UKIP getting its first MP in the House of Commons (news of that was carried by the media from Tuesday morning of this week and many newspapers not until Wednesday morning).

"However, the poll is not all good news for Mr. Cameron as his personal approval rating has dropped slightly. Mr. Cameron's team are nervous about the forthcoming London elections and the Conservative leader last week told The Daily Telegraph that a loss for Boris Johnson would be "bad" and "very disappointing" for the party."

The Telegraph report about the 18% Conservative lead in the new YouGov opinion poll said that the Conservative lead of 18% had increased from 14% because of annoyance at and Labour squabbling over abolition of the 10 pence tax band for low earners.

But what I think we will see here is the destruction of the Left.
Europe I think shall move to a host of Centre-Right governments with Far Right oppositions.
