Default Mrs. Dunwoody, Mr. Benn

"She took a very independent stance on the EU" said the anti-EU politician Mr. 'Tony' Benn last night upon hearing of the sad loss of his former colleague Mrs. Dunwoody:

Probably about the last of the people who were both Labour and honest who survived into this millenium.

I had the greatest of respect for the woman.

She was in favour of the UK being a member of the EU. The rest is inconsequential.

When Betty Bothyroyd retired in 2000 I wrote to Mrs Dunwoody to say that she should stand for Speaker. Iwas pleased that she did and it is to the House of Commons discredit that they overlooked her.

I am saddened at her passing, may the souls of the departed rest in peace and rise in glory. Amen.

Mrs. Dunwoody voted for a referendum on the EU Constitution (Lisbon Treaty) in a division in the Commons earlier this year.

She opposed the euro.

She was a member of Labour Against The EU Superstate.

She approved a report from the Commons Transport committee she was Chairman of which dubbed the Blair-backed EU Galileo satellite system "an EU vanity project."

She spoke her mind and would not be told what to do by 'New Labour' (i.e. europhile) Whips.

If every Labour member of Parliament was like her we anti-EU people would be much nearer our target of recovery of sovereignty from the EU empire.

Seconded.

We have just lost one of the great Parliamentary characters - Labour will be a duller party without her.

UK politics has too few people like her - principled, plain-speaking, hard-working and pro-sovereignty.

May Her Soul Rest In Peace.
