Default Big lead for Conservatives in new opinion poll published on 18.3.2008

The pro-EU Guardian today publishes an opinion poll putting the Conservatives 13% ahead of Labour. The poll by ICM was carried out after last week's Budget:

Conservatives 42% (+5%)
Labour 29% (-5%)
Liberal Dims 21%

The Conservatives reached 43% in an ICM poll once last year. The last time Labour had a 29% vote share in an ICM poll was in March 2007.

If the above projected voting figures were repeated at a General Election the Conservatives would gain about 160 seats and would hold 355 constituencies. Labour would win approximately 214 seats.

According to the latest ICM poll, tt appears that the Conservatives are taking votes from Labour and not so much from the Liberal 'Democrats'. Pro-EU David Cameron has tried to target the Liberal 'Democrat' vote making speeches in which he has described himself as "a liberal Conservative."

The last ICM poll published in the News of the World on Sunday of this week put the Conservatives 9% ahead of Labour. A poll by YouGov published last weekend put the Conservatives 16% ahead of Labour.
