Simple. When the name National Democrats was chosen, the LibDems used the term internally as a shorthand for their national party. They complained to Ian Anderson. At the time he said the name was not "owned" by the LibDems, which was true. However, he said it did his party no disservice, as people thought that the National Democrats were the LibDems. A bit disingenuous, at least!

I'm sure there was more confusion between the Liberal Party and the Liberal Democrats than the National Democrats and the Liberal Democrats. The Liberal Party seems to spend half its time saying it isn't the Liberal Democrats. Liberal Party votes could be higher than they should be because of Lib-Dem supporters voting for it by mistake. I have a National Democrat manifesto from 1997 and it says they support freedom of religion. I'm wondering if Martin Wingfield has changed his stance on the matter in the meantime. |

What you say is also true. I don't expect anything from "Lib-Dem whingers"! And yes, the National Democrats are history, as are quite a few others. With regard to Vortex, I'm not at all mixed up. I have known of all these parties which have come and gone over the last 60 years. The first long before I was born.
