Default Television reports on EU Treaty referendum vote: Pro-EU Clegg on the defensive

This is how the ITV and BBC Television political commentators have just reported the EU Treaty referendum vote in the Commons today:

At 10 pm tonight ITV 1 News at Ten Newsreader Sir Trevor MacDonald introduced the report on the EU referendum vote in the House of Commons by saying "Why you won't have a vote on the biggest change for a generation". He then referred to the EU Treaty as "controversial".

Tom Bradby on ITV 1 News at Ten then asked Clegg (europhile leader of the Liberal 'Democrats') "You have lost three of your MPs from your frontbench when you tried to impose a three line whip to get everyone to 'sit on the fence' on whether to back a referendum on the EU Treaty - many think your policy on this has been a shambles."

Ex-MEP Clegg (allegedly dubbed "Calamity Clegg" by someone in the campaign of his party leadership rival 'Chris' Huhne) responded by calling Conservative calls for an EU Treaty referendum "synthetic and based on legal technicalities".

Tom Bradby claimed later in his report "The (Labour) Government has handled this well - they did a U-turn but stuck to it." He added "The Government has got off lightly."

"The Conservatives have got to decide what to do now that that they have lost this vote (on holding a referendum on the EU 'Amending' Treaty).

Mr. Bradby concluded "The party which handled this badly is the Liberal 'Democrats' - some are asking questions about his leadership."

Over on the 10 pm news on BBC 1 Television tonight, political correspondent Nick Robinson said at 10.06 pm "It is 'Nick' Clegg who has to face up this and people may remember his first decision as one resulting in one big Liberal 'Democrat' divide."

Committed europhile Clegg only very narrowly won the leadership of the europhile Liberal 'Democrats' in December 2007. Pro-EU 'Chris' Huhne was only a small number of votes behind.

Hopefully pro-EU Clegg's 'strategy' on this will help highlight to more voters just what a disorientated, dishonest and opportunistic europhile shower the Liberal 'Democrats' are.
