It is with mixed feelings that one draws attention to House of Commons’ Early Day Motion 986 tabled by Liberal Democrat Shadow Minister for the Countryside Tim Farron MP which states “That this House notes and is saddened by the reduction in the number of UK dairy farms; notes that the quota price of milk has crashed from about 32 pence per litre in 1988 to about 1 pence per litre in 2008; recognises the role played in this by major supermarket chains in pushing down the price of dairy products with little regard for the need to get a fair price for farmers; and calls upon the Government to act to protect farms of all kinds to ensure security of food supply”.
Whilst, as an employee of the UK’s largest supermarket chain – which boasts the somewhat ironic marketing motto “Every little helps” – myself, one acknowledges the role played by leading chain stores in pushing down the price of dairy products to the detriment of farmers’ livelihoods, one nevertheless feels that equal (if not more) blame for the pitiful state of the United Kingdom farming industry should be apportioned to the European Union and the Common Agricultural Policy which has proved disastrous for farmers and the rural economy alike. Although many rural voters in Great Britain naively vote Liberal Democrat in protest against the Conservative and Labour Parties, Liberal Democrat MPs like Tim Farron are often less than honest themselves in admitting that their party is firmly committed to the transformation of the EU from being a union of nation-states into a Federal Europe of the Regions which, far from protecting UK farms of all kinds and ensuring security of our food supply, will destroy the liberty and livelihood of many in the countryside and our ability to be nationally self-sufficient in the production and supply of foodstuffs, just as surely as United Kingdom membership of the European Union has destroyed our country’s raw materials (e.g., coal and steel) and our nation’s manufacturing industries. Tim Farron, wearing his other hat as Chairman of the All-Party Hill Farming Group, should know this! Nevertheless, one supports the spirit of Mr Farron’s motion and, in the interests of advancing the livelihood of dairy farmers throughout England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland – if not the electoral fortunes of the Liberal Democrats and/or the aspirations, hopes and ideals of the hated European Union – one urges you to write to your MP at the House of Commons, Westminster, London, SW1A 0AA, to urge him/her to sign Early Day Motion 986.
