Of course if this government had not vandelised the old one beyond repair we would not need a new written one!
However like Matt I dread to think what it will look like.

I like how he just talks of creating new rights and responsibilities... Typical leftist thinking they can pluck thing out of thin air to support their case.
Thankfully, it will have to go to referendum.

Nice of him to tell the Americans first. What is this stuff about citizens? I thought we were still subjects, but that's the point.
If we have a written constitution who will be Head of State? Will the Act of Succession be incorporated or will this be an opportunity for our new 'citizens' from around the world to abolish our monarchy as irrelevant in a modern age? A referendum of Poles and Pakistanis will produce a different constitution to a referendum of English, Welsh, Scots and Irish. Will our new constitution subordinate us to the EU and place EU law as paramount (as it is de facto in any event) or will we regain our rights? In 20 years time we might have duties and obligations to the EU that cannot be overridden by duties to Queen and country. This constitution will end up being as legally binding as the Boy Scout's Pledge, but it will abolish the monarchy and the House of Lords and all our dated customs and traditions that need modernising. This is all part of the softening up process.

Aardvark: I agree, but Constitutional changes have already taken place which are ignored by the Executive, Legislature and the Judiciary. The Queen
already has an EU citizenship which complements her national one. After 'Lisbon' her citizenship will be in addition to her national one. Soon, less than the twenty years you predict, the EU citizenship will be the dominant one. The Statutes of Westminster (1931) state that all matters,'which touch upon the succession', must be placed before the parliaments of the Dominions. A Monarch, with a citizenship, which itself is subservient to the citizenship of another foreign power, 'touches upon the succession', based upon any intelligent interpretation of those Statutes. What is being done about this? Absolutely nothing. Our Constitution and laws have been suspended and our nation state is in the final stages of dismantlement. We are to be defeated without even a murmur from the populace. What a stoic people we are- or are we merely mad? |
