Speaker of the Commons criticised for not making Brown answer questions put to him

The problem is there is simply no precendant for the current situation regarding the speaker, most I think would wish him gone but if he decides to stand at the next election and wants to carry on in the chair then someone would need to chalange him for the job, by convention the speaker is re-elected unapposed so whether anyone would have the nerve to do it I dont know. But the thought of Speaker martin in the chair until after the London Olympics sends a chill down my spine.

Amonst other things he actually mentions the loss of power to the EU - still rare in UK journalism.

I think Charles Kennedy should be speaker. He openly says that if you don't like the EU, you should be in UKIP, and he would make a refreshing change from the current teetoal incumbent...

I've liked Paxman ever since he let me ask a question and then follow it up with a full attack on David Davis, Charles Clarke and Mark Oaten, on a Newsnight special.

My Dad keeps that on video. I will have to see if I can get it on Youtube one day.

Yes, both (Mrs. Dunwoody, the Labour MP and Mr. Shepherd, the Conservative MP) are (as you know RJT) eurosceptic.

The problem is that if either became Speaker neither could speak out against the EU but the advantage of having either as Speaker is that they would ensure that eurosceptics were treated fairly (i.e. that they were given their fair share of available speaking time in Commons debates).
