Default Brown says retrospective referendum on Treaty would mean EU membership renegotiation

Mr. Robert Goodwill, the eurosceptic Conservative MP for Scarborough, asked Gordon Brown at Prime Minister's Question Time today at 12.13 pm "There are reports that four former Labour Government ministers face disciplinary action for campaigning for referendum on EU 'Amending' Treaty - does this mean that keeping Labour Manifesto promises to hold a referendum are not now compatible with Labour membership?"

Gordon Brown - avoiding answering the question - said "What was called the Constitutional concept was abandoned - only Ireland is holding a referendum (jeers from the Conservative benches). The Conservatives plan a referendum on the EU 'Amending' Treaty if they get in which would mean a renegotiation of UK membership of the EU. The questions are for the Conservatives and not for us."

Good.

Pity that 'The Conservatives [do not] plan a referendum on the EU 'Amending' Treaty if they get in'.

Default Conservatives, referendum, EU 'Amending' Treaty, television, William Hague

Yes - it is true that no official promise from the Conservatives has been made to hold a retrospective referendum on the EU 'Amending' Treaty.

A number of television interviewers have tried to get David Cameron and/or William Hague to formally commit to a retrospective referendum - but neither has done so.

The pressure must be kept on Cameron and Hague to do this, this morning a europhile on the forum said it would make no diffrence even if there was a no vote! i disagree, such a remark shows great political naviety. It would in fact start a momentum in favour of the anti Eu movement, which is of course why the Government will not grant one and why the opposition will not promise a retrospective one.
