Only time I agreed with him was when he said to Thatcher on the day she resigned that it was always a pleasure to tackle a heavyweight opponent than a lightweight spineless leader of the opposition ( Kinnock)

Yes - she was and is a heavyweight politician. And Mr. Jim Sillars was right - Kinnock was and is a political lightweight. Ideal EU material.

Oh he was passiontley PRO EU you will not be suprised to know that.

He was crticisng Kinnock for backsliding on his prervious anti nuclear stance, a policy which would have left this country in an appaling state had it ever been implemented.

Exactly. Thank goodness Kinnock never got in as Prime Minister - emigration levels from the UK would have reached record-breaking levels. I think so many people would have left the country that the population of New Zealand alone would have at least tripled.

As for Sillars - what awful political views the man had. I wasn't aware that he was a europhile but it does not surprise me to find out that he was. After all, the anti-UK socialistic Scottish so-called 'Nationalists' (SNP) regard the EU as a vital part of their plan to break up the Union of the UK.

Oh they all are in the SNP, everyting about the EU suits them well, backward socialist ecnomic policys, penalising indepndance and the free market.

As for Kinnock Mrs Thatcher pointed out to him that perhaps given that the Labour Party was so weak on ecnomics it would suit him to hand over key ecnomic power to Brussels.

I wish Michael Foot had got in now. We would'nt be in the EU and Blair would never have happened.

Trouble is he would have removed all our nuclear weapons.

Just to add a bit of local insight to this discussion, the Scottish press have completely come out on Salmond's side on this. They are saying it is a great tactical move on his part.

Furthermore, surely a new election is the last thing we want? Salmond is actually ahead in the polls at the moment, not to mention that Wendy Alexander is floundering and sinking fast. I would get the feeling that the Conservatives, the Liberal Democrats, the Greens and the SNP would all vote in favour of a new election. The Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats both lost a seat at the last election and would love a chance to grab it back, the SNP would be hoping to make much larger gains from Labour and the Greens would be hoping to get back from their two seats (from a loss of four). Only Labour would oppose it knowing that their time has finally run out.

If a new election were called, I could see the Conservatives and the SNP gaining, with the Greens losing more seats, the Liberal Democrats staying about the same or losing and Labour having a disasterous defeat.
