UK military faces spectrum sell off | The Register

The UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) may sell off some of its reserved radio spectrum, potentially for large sums. Guidelines for sale of military frequencies are being drawn up by the communications regulator, Ofcom.
“Public bodies and the MoD in particular hold some of the most valuable and sought-after radio spectrum," said Ofcom chief Ed Richards earlier today.
"By working with these organisations we are enabling them to trade and release this spectrum which will create new opportunities for the development of wireless services for the whole country."

No worries here, it's a step forwards for once. Skynet is the replacement.

Let's just hope the MOD gets something good with the money.

The MoD has been slapped with an AIP charge (Administered Incentive Pricing) to force them to off load their unused spectrum as outlined in the Cave report.

It is a good thing. We are working ona network in the Thames Valley on a Test & Development license in one of the bands to be sold by the MoD. It is lovely clean spectrum and opens up the market to serious competition as owning a national license is not required and a local license is of minimal cost. Good for everybody.

Although I might be slightly biased, as a wireless network operator, this is a good thing. The MoD has the spectrum as a relic of the past and the government trying to open it up for most efficient use is great.
