I espect to wake up one day, with the "News" channels stating that we have switched to the Euro and that we should all take any pounds we have left to the recycling plant immedietely.

I believe that the electorate would finally take a stand if any government tried to pretend that it was not obliged to hold such a referendum. But that's in my more dreamy moments.

As we can all see a minister of Gordon the Moron's capabilities is more then capable of taking us into the euro and the man will tell us how good it is for us

And if Brown tried to take us in without a mandate from the people, do you think the people would stand for it?

Default Gordon Brown, Blair, UK, euro, EU 'President', currency, Pound, drive

Not if Gordon Brown has told Blair that he will 'deliver' the UK to the euro during the period Blair were EU 'President'. Not that Brown can actually, on his own, get rid of our national currency - but he again said last June that he is pro-euro and wants the UK to join it (i.e. he wants to destroy our ancient Pound). Many think that, at some point, Brown is going to launch a drive to join the euro - and there is no doubt that if he were to do so he would welcome all the 'help' he could get in doing that from Blair.

Default Outrage, Labour, power, seats, leadership challenge

There would be outrage if he tried to do such a thing. What support there is for this Labour shower in power would slump and Labour MPs would be very worried about losing their seats. There would almost certainly be a leadership challenge in the Labour Party.

I agree - if this Labour shower tried to wriggle out of the Labour commitment to a referendum on the euro the people of this country would punish Labour very heavily at the ballot box.

Default Referendum, euro, Government, power, Pounds, Labour, currency, UK, anti-euro

But the Labour shower in power could try and bring in the euro 'by the back door'. This would be done by them trying to get the euro available everywhere for those who want to change their money from Pounds into euros and by saying that payments in euros would be willingly accepted in public services. Labour would actively encourage people to use the euro in the UK even if the Pound remained as the official national currency.

Brown could also try to bring in the euro as a sort of 'dual currency' to the Pound (i.e. he could say that both euros and Pounds would be accepted in all shops). He would do this, of course, to try to reduce usage of the Pound in the UK before announcing that because the Pound wasn't being used as much as it was he thought that the UK should now move to full usage of the euro.

I think all pro-Pound/anti-euro people should be watching for signs from this Labour shower in power that they are trying to undermine the Pound.

We must remain vigilant.

I don't think the people would if the government of the day spins a positive case for the euro. And I think the Tories are just as capable of doing that as Labour are.

I agree, especially now the market in financial services has been liberalised, but again I think the Tories are equally as capable of undermining the pound. And vigilance isn't doing us much good in the Lisbon Treaty debate.

The British are generally numb to the goings-on in Europe. They are happy so long as they are not too far away from a Tescos or that Easyjet can continue to ferry them cheaply to Costa Concrete. They instinctively know that politics is a big fraud and clever people use the system to posture their vanity and fill their bank accounts. It amazes me though why some still bother to vote; perhaps out of habit or it is a sacred transaction once reserved for the churches. That must be it; Blair's messianic pretensions are filling a void created with the end of religion and patriotism. Perhaps he sees himself as a modern Holy Roman Emperor making global decisions, saving the planet, controlling capital flows and even directing popes of Rome!
