A new ICM opinion poll is published in today's Sunday Telegraph putting voting intentions at:
Conservatives 40% (down 3%) Labour 33 (down 3%) Liberal Dims 18% (up 4%) 'Others' 10% (up 2%) The poll will come as a disappointment for the europhile Liberal Dims who would have been hoping for an electoral boost from their new leader (Clegg) which would have taken them above a 20% share of the national vote (the Dim Libs got a 23% national vote share at the last General Election). The ICM poll also says that 75% of all respondents think that it should be made harder for immigrants to come into the UK. The headline to the following Telegraph article claims that support for the Cameron-Conservatives is up - when, in actual fact, it has gone down but the gap between them and Labour has widened (due to rising support for the Liberal Dims): Tory support rises after tough welfare stance - Telegraph Last edited by Britannist; 12-01-2008 at 11:42 PM. |

This is partly because their success is based on effective local 'pavement-politics' campaigning and partly because, on the day, the LibDems end up picking up more of the 'Don't Knows' as a protest vote. The poll proves what I have always said. Cameron and his ghastly crew of de haut en bas silver-spooners do not 'click' with the electorate. Their so-called success is 100% down to Labour's bungling. But I sense that the Great Unwashed are coming to terms with the peccadillos of their favourite party. If so it's bad news for Lord Snooty and his Chums. |
