Britannist, I took this quote out!

IRV is very good at preventing minor parties from interfering with the two-party system, but it is arguably no better than our current plurality system at expanding the two-party system and giving other parties a chance to actually win elections.

Thank you for that quote Arden.

I read after the last UK General Election that had Alternative Vote (AV)been used at May 2005 General Election, Labour would have got an even bigger majority (on less than 21% of the votes of all those on the electoral register) than under the system we use now (for General Elections) - First Past The Post (FPTP). Apparently, under AV, the Liberal Dims would have kept most of their seats in the Commons (at the last General Election) - but not made that breakthrough (i.e. getting 90, 100 or over 100 seats) in the House of Commons that they crave for.

But, as I have written earlier on, AV could start to work very much against Labour and the Dim Libs if they both became unpopular at the same time (and work to the benefit of the Conservatives, UKIP and others instead).

What UKIP and the English Democrats need to do is to get into a position where they can win seats in the Commons under any electoral system used - including FPTP.

In Frence, (The Late) President Mitterrand changed the voting system from a purely proportional voting system to AV (which they use now in France for national Parliamentary elections) when 'small' parties started winning seats (in the French National Assembly).

We can be sure of one thing - if AV is brought in here (for elections to the House of Commons and/or to local authorities) and UKIP and/or the English Democrats win seats in the Commons and on local councils (or start to look like they could win seats there) the europhile ruling 'elite' will quickly find some excuse to say AV is not working in the national interest - and change back to FPTP.
