Piara Khabra, the oldest member of the House of Commons, has died at the age of 82.
He held the Middlesex constituency of Ealing Southall (which has a large population of Asian origin) for 15 years, having won the seat at the 1992 General Election. He was a member of the Constitutional Affairs select commitee and "had a special interest in India" BBC Ceefax says (analogue page 106). Tributes were paid to Mr. Khabra at the start of today's Prime Minister's Question Time. |

UKIP did not stand at Ealing Southall at the last General Election (nor in 2001), where the result was a majority of over 11, 000 for Labour (the London Borough of Ealing was won by the Conservatives at least year's local elections, by the way - the area consists of three Parliamentary constituencies):

It might be interesting considering it is a heavily Asian area. In 2001 an independent from an Asian radio station got a very good result. Respect will almost certainly stand, but probably can't win because the area is more Sikh / Hindu than Muslim. Could there be a Brent East style shock Lib-Dem victory? The BNP probably won't bother, but will English Democrats field a candidate?

So you would prefer a Labour or Tory victory?
