He used to sit it the same seat, just like Grocer Heath and Dennis Skinner. Tony Blair seemed not to understand any question Pira asked a PMQs, possibly due to Pira's heavy accent. Not unheard of. Scottish MPs have appeared unintelligible to English MPs!

This is a seat with a heavy Indian rather than Pakistani background. Could the BNP put up an Indian so that we can be sure of their new-found pro-Hindu beliefs? It would also unsettle the powers-that-be!

Oh, what a fantasist I am!

The Liberal Democrats shot up 14.4% at the 2005 election. This would make them seen as the challenger party.

However, the Labour support has appeared flaky over the years. Piara Khabra lost quite a lot of his vote when four Independents stood against him in 2001. UKIP failed miserably 10 years ago, but that was 10 years ago! If this time UKIP put up a candidate more suited to the electorate, then there are votes to be had.

Default Ealing Southall, Liberal Dims, Parliamentary By-Election

Interesting.

I suspect that most of the increase in the Liberal Dim party vote last time (in the Ealing Southall constituency and elsewhere for that matter) was due to anti-Iraq 'war' protest voters defecting (to the Liberal Dims) from Labour.

If Labour and the Conservatives run an efficient campaign at Southall (in the Parliamentary By-Election) I would expect that the vote for the europhile Liberal Dims would (hopefully) fall.

What's the likelihood of UKIP putting up a candidate?

I can hardly contain my indifference.

If UKIP bother to run (I doubt UKIP are uber strong in this area), then the party should use it as a chance to get media coverage that makes UKIP look good for a change.

I would be a bit surprised if there is a UKIP candidate. There was only 1 UKIP candidate in last years local elections & he didn't get a great many votes (though a few more than in 2002). The ward was Southfield but I don't know if it is within Ealing Southall.

There will be votes to be had but not too many I would think. I would doubt that UKIP will be willing to spend a load of money in a seat where UKIP is not likely to do well; & I don't think there is any serious prospect of beating one of the big 3 here which is a mark of success that I consider.

So Labour and the Tories are not europhiles?

Labours candidate will be selected from an all womens short-list.

I wonder if there will be a Blanau Gwent style break away.

This will also be Gordan Browns first test as PM.

I predict a Lib Dem win.

I had heard of him, but only once before.

UKIP ought to stand, but there's no need to put a huge campaign in place. We should simply stand a candidate and put out a leaflet to each house. No need to spend a fortune.
