Britannist has some supporters
Default Could Liberal Dim Party leader Campbell be made Speaker?

Could Sir Menzies Campbell, leader of the europhile Liberal Dims - and criticised by some for his leadership of that party - be made Speaker of the Commons?

The idea is mentioned in an article by Iain Dale, the former Conservative Parliamentary candidate, on his blog today (please click on the following link and scroll down - in the section dated 25.5.2007 - to an article titled 'Is Mr. Speaker losing it?' ):

When I think of other speakers in my lifetime such as George Thomas, Bernard Weatherill and Betty Bothroyd much of their authrority came from the fact the had cross party support, Speaker Martin did not get this at his election I dont think a single tory voted for him. Added to that he simply is not up to it.

Campbell as Speaker would be an improvement but then who wouldnt.

It'd be unusual to say the least, my money is still on a Labour MP.
