SOUTHAMPTON City Council will be run by the conservatives.

The shock decision means the tories will be in charge of the authority for the first time in 23 years.

The drama unfolded as councillors gathered to elect a new leader at the Civic Centre last night.

Liberal Democrat councillor Norah Goss split with her party to prevent a Labour administration being formed on the casting vote of the new Labour mayor.

She instead voted to put in the Conservative group whilst her former colleagues abstained.

Her vote was enough to see councillor Alec Samuels elected as leader of the council despite Labour opposition.

advertisementCllr Goss, now an independent councillor, said she could not let a Labour administration ruin the hard work of her former colleagues who have been the previous minority administration for the past four years.

Liberal Democrats pledged to retain their independence.

Independent UKIP has some supporters
Default Re: Southampton

Thanks for that post theking. An apparently principled Lib Dem Councillor is nice to see. Ryansoton will know if that is good or bad news for Southampton and much less importantly good or bad for UKIP Southampton .

Westminster wise, who cares if the Lib Dems back Labour or Blue Labour.

C_steam i am not a Southampton FC supporter having been raised in Kent i support the local team there so I am not overly bothered that saints lost to Derby apart it would have been nice to see them back in the prmiership.

Anyway back to topic, I applaud Cllr Goss for doing what she believed to be right and not following her group leader and acting like a sheep.

Although a tory council is better then a labour one, Cllr Samuels the new council leader is not the right man to lead the council.
