Scotland already has an olympic team and it will be competing next year at the Beijing 2008 games as well as London 2012:
http://www.olympics.org.uk/home2.aspx

An achievement such as gaining its own Olympic team would potentially equal anything an election could raise. For a Scottish team competing independently on British soil would be a massive victory for the SNP and would utilise one of the most effective weapons in politics - sport. The tactic of using sport as a political tool really is low and has been used throughout history by the most distasteful of leaders from despots such as Nero, Hitler, Stalin and Mugabe to opportunist lightweights such as Blair and Wilson.

The Times is pretty slow, this was reported in the Scotsman two or three days ago...

Also, they had a poll showing 78% of Scots in favour of this move. I also don't see why its that big a surprise since it was in their manifesto.

I always find it funny how different media sounds during and after an election. The Times supported a change in Scottish government and look where it has gotten them...

I have a feeling that this means a little more than just Salmond being silly.
I think Salmond is showing what can happen for the Scots if they go down the independence route, but not if they stay within the UK.
As shown, a large majority of Scots are in favour of this and there is nothing better than sport for getting people's attention - much more so than politics.
I wouldn't be surprised if there are more things that he will play on in the same sort of vein.

Default Salmond, Scottish so-called Nationalists, 2012 Olympics

There is nil chance of Salmond's request being accepted. If the International Olympic Committee said Scotland could have its own team at the 2012 Olympics in London (i.e. a team separate from the rest of the UK), the committee would then be approached by representatives of the 'regions' of Bavaria (Germany), Corsica (France), Sicily (Italy), Basque area (Spain), Quebec (Canada) Kurdistan (Turkey/Iraq) and many other places - all demanding to send their own teams to the Olympics.

The europhile Salmond (leader of the Scottish so-called Nationalists) knows full well that his request for Scotland to have its own team at the Olympics 2012 will be thrown out.

As he hopefully will be too from his job as Scottish First Minister - preferably sooner rather than later.

Of course he does, but at worst its a bit of mischief for him to ask, at best it's aiming a waiverers who might see some additional advantages in being independent.
