Absolutely absurd! This is making me fume at the ears.

When did politicians stop being our representatives and start to become above the law? The government is instituted by the will of the government, not the other way around. We see this time and again in the media as well, referring to Blair and Brown as our leaders. I'm sorry, but they are nobodies leaders, they are here to serve (and its a poor display on our democracy when this often never happens).

This is just another example that 'leader' and 'ruler' mentality.

The House of Commons voted in favour of the bill today. It now goes to the House of Lords - only they can now stop it becoming law. I have briefly skimmed the debate and it seems to me that Sylvia Heal (deputy Speaker) helped it on its way. I am no expert on parliamentary procedure but she allowed some petitions to be placed before the house before the main debate but then decided that the rest could only be placed after the debate. She also curtailed the debate by accepting Maclean's call for the question on an amendment to be put despite her not allowing any Labour members to speak on said amendment. She also prevented the house from voting on some of the amendments altogether. Below is the list of those who supported and opposed the bill. There were 21 more voters who supported that the question of the 3rd reading should be now put. I suspect most of them supported the bill but preferred not to have their names in the below list.

96 to 25? 121 Voters. 21 abstained? Less than 20% turnout. Cool, they must have all been in the pub, at the bookies or in bed then.

I think it is time people started seriously considering whether the whole system is now so rigged, that playing by the rules is not an option.

"There is a serious issue here about the fact that some constituents' correspondence to MPs is being released by, for instance, local authorities - despite the 'protections' which supposedly exist under the Data Protection Act. If people can't go to their MP and guarantee that their problems will be kept confidential, the whole principle of what MPs are actually for goes out the window.

In politics generally we need to step back from the discussion which takes place about our governance exclusively through the lens of the media and entertain the idea that all our MPs are not arrogant and out to be above the law but have serious issues to contend with."

Got that response from local mp.

"supposedly" is perhaps the key word in that response for me. That implies that those protections do not exist in which the Data Protection Act should be amended. Alternatively & more likely in my opinion is that some local authorities are failing to adhere to the act. There are examples where public authorities have wrongly used the DPA to restrict the release of info so it makes sense there are instances where they have done the opposite. If state officials are breaking the DPA they and/or their employer should be sanctioned where appropriate. A brand new law is certainly not the answer. Presumably your MP voted in favour of the bill? If not would you be able to tell us who he/she is?
