I had to change doctors a couple of years ago. My wife insisted that I went to register in spite of the fact that I will never consult one again.
I had an appointment with the practice nurse.
She measured me, weighed me, put the results into her computer and said "Hmm, quite overweight."
I'm just over 6'3", weigh about 14st 12lb. I play squash, golf and I scuba dive, I have a gym at home. I am not unfit, I am far from overweight.

I asked how she came to that conclusion, she replied "Because the computer says so!"
I told her that the algorithm they used was flawed and was a pointless exercise because it takes no account of muscle mass built up through sport.
She then agreed and said that they were stopping using it as a guide because "there were problems with it."
How bloody stupid can they be?

She then took my blood pressure, which was sky high by that time - I was seething more than somewhat!
She then said "Well, come back in a month and if it's still high I'll put you on medication to get it under control."
What I said at that point is virtually unprintable, but she got the message.
She wrote on her notes "Self-treating".
How right she is!

so £6.70 is about £0.50 or £1 a week, but the state is picking up the remaining £43 of the bill.
Hi Tony.

You have far more knowledge than me on the subject of Drug Co's and Drugs in general but, £6.70 (per prescription) was for 4 weeks supply only. That = £1.67.5p pw. and yes I do accept the state picks up the bill for the remainder of the cost. So how much is a life worth? Even if the cost of the prescription was £5.00 a day we would have found the money from somewhere .

The most dispiriting thing about all this and the subject that makes me very angry is that Junkie scum get Methadone-or similar-free.

This seems a perverse way to take care of patients. I don't want to bump the thread by changing the subject but I'm sure you would agree we seem to have the priorities wrong.

I agree with you Phil.
Bear in mind that when I worked out the cost of Genox I didn't know which variant your wife was using, what the dosage was or the scrip size. It was a mid-range shot on costs that I knew about.
Even at £6.70/month it is still only around 20% or so of the cost, so it isn't a bad deal.
My major point on that, the same with vaccinations against cervical cancer, to simply to give to EVERYONE as a mandate is irresponsible, especially with the "black box" warning that goes with it.
I don't publicise that for fun either. I have lived with too much cancer in my life and it is not a bowl of cherries. I hate funerals. I do it try and educate people and allow them to make up their own minds, rather than simply taking what is doled out - patients are often far more expert than the doctors. I would talk to a patient rather than a doctor any day.

As for your point on drugs to junkies, I agree, but then that's the same as giving thugs and hooligans free holidays or motorbikes because they've been caught burgling for the 100th time.
Our priorities are wrong, but politically scared governments listen to the wrong experts every time.
Guess who gives the most advice on health? And who gets to have representatives on all government advisory committees?
Yep, the drugs companies.
As I said, they control the system.
It's so easy with governments. All they have to do is to say something like "No responsible government would consider leaving the public unprotected in the event of an outbreak" and they write out yet another cheque for £200 million!
It's as easy as pie!

If only life were that simple for the rest of us.
