Europhile Lord Lambton who served as Defence minister in the fanatically pro-EU Heath Government which had given away most of what there was to defend to the EU – has died (it was announced today). Reports said that Lambton quit the appalling Heath regime after allegedly being photographed smoking cannabis in bed with two prostitutes. Not surprisingly, when the discredited Lambton abandoned the country (as we wish all europhiles would do) he chose Italy – an EEC/EU founding member nation – to spend the rest of his days in.
Iain Dale, a Conservative candidate at last year’s General Election, wrote the following this evening on his blog: “Lord Lambton, a former Conservative defence minister who resigned after he was photographed smoking cannabis in bed with two prostitutes, has died at the age of 84. Anthony Lambton was one of two ministers who resigned from Ted Heath's government as a result of sex scandals involving prostitutes. The other was the Leader of the House of Lords Lord Jellicoe. He was forced to resign after pictures of him in bed with the call girls were published in the News of the World. Following an investigation by the security services, he was denied access to secret material because of fears that he was vulnerable to blackmail. In an interview with Sir Robin Day after he was exposed he was was asked why he used call girls. He said (Quote) I think that people sometimes like variety. I think it's as simple as that and I think that impulse is probably understood by almost everybody. Don't you? (End of quote) After his resignation Lambton moved to Italy where he has lived ever since. He was married to Belinda Blew Jones, who died three years ago. They are survived by five children.” |

The thing about Lord Jellicoe was that the Great Grocer suddenly got all priggish and demanded to know if anyone else had EVER been with prostitutes. Lord Jellicoe did the decent thing and owned up (the last time that ever happened!) and consequently lost his job. If Heath had just told Lambton to go without a fuss, Jellicoe would have survived, as nobody knew of Jellicoe's indescretions.
