Europhile Prescott costing taxpayer almost £2 million a year
ITV 1 Teletext reported at 6.21 pm (on 21.11.2006, analogue page 308) that the administration costs for Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott have reached almost £2 million a year.
Prescott told the Commons in a statement “I have been cleared by the Treasury to spend £1.96 million”.
The Conservative opposition (Shadow) Constitutional Affairs secretary, Oliver Heald, said that the expenditure was a scandalous “waste of taxpayers’ money”. He said that the Conservatives would vote against it.
Following poor local election results for the Labour Party in May 2006 (partly blamed on press publicity about Prescott’s private life) europhile Prescott lost most of his responsibilities which were given to Ruth Kelly MP to deal with.
