Government pledges to act on climate change

Published: 30 Oct 2006
By: Gary Gibbon

Tony Blair pledges to act as a report warns climate change could shrink the global economy by 20 per cent.

It's an apocalyptic vision - economic growth slashed, millions of people displaced, the poor made even poorer.

This is the fate of the planet if nothing is done to counter climate change, according to the World Bank's former chief economist.

In the British government's first economic assessment of the damage caused by greenhouse emissions, Sir Nicholas Stern says doing nothing is not an option. But his ideas for avoiding disaster are just as challenging.

Without taking action - Sir Nicholas warns global warming could shrink the world economy by 20 per cent - with poorest countries hit the hardest.

Two hundred million people could be displaced by floods and drought.

The review calls for a global system to trade in carbon emissions. But that is something the world has never managed to agree on before. Closer to home, the Chancellor has promised a climate change bill in the next Queens Speech, with a commitment to cut the UK's emissions by 60 per cent by 2050.

That's a massive reduction - and achieving that kind of target would mean real sacrifice, right now. Something that industry - and consumers - might not be prepared to take on.

The human race had better find something other than 'getting and spending' to do with their time!

We know what in it for the politicians with the EU - plenty of high paying/lavish expense accounts jobs for the the class. Iraq War - something for Blairs legacy, chance to stride the world stage, lots of oil. Police state - one for the control freaks. Global warming? Few winners there!

You are kidding right?

It's a cash cow, they are going to scare everyone into subservience.

All on biased, one-sided junk science.

It's an old trick played by the ruling elite on the serfs for ages.

I don't think so - this is for real and the politicos are scared. It is true that the only way they can see to reduce greenhouse gasses is through taxes etc. and planning schemes to enable GDP to continue to rise whilst reducing carbon emmissons, when the most obvious route is to slow down the economy and get people to do other things with there time rather than lusting after the most trifling next 'must have' item.

There are no doubt questions on the extent to which global warming will damage the planet. However, there are the most powerful organisations on earth [the giant multinational corporations] trying to play down the effect for they know that the their continued growth and sphere of control is threatened if 'getting and spending' is slowed down as it needs to be. These organisation are more likely to be the ones funding spurious science because it clearly suits their ends to undermine the broad consensus.

Perhaps more to the point here, any political party that wishes to make progress, which does not include policies on this issue that is accepted as true by the majority, is unlikely to get very far!
