Default Hewitt asks for alcohol tax rise

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/6089784.stm

Quote:
Tax on alcohol should rise to reduce binge drinking among teenagers, Health Secretary Patricia Hewitt has said.
Ms Hewitt urged chancellor Gordon Brown to "really increase" taxes on alcohol, especially on drinks such as alcopops, most popular with young people.

She told children's paper First News it would stop teenagers spending money on drink, and ending up in casualty.

The Treasury said Mr Brown "routinely considers a wide range" of suggestions on tax ahead of the Budget.
How much more fascist can this cunch of bunts get?

I think people need to realize they need to drink less, not get forced to drink less. This will only make problems worse.

Exactly.

Once it becomes forbidden, people will do it more just for the thrill. Only they will buy it from the black market, which could be unsafe.

This is just another rape the public attempt.

Instead of finding REAL solutions to REAL problems, the government insists on rasing tax on this ... banning that... And your right, it wont be long till we have the first teenage deaths due to alcahol poisoning due to the tax raise

Wait. You mean to say that we're not all sipping quietly in continental-style cafe-bars because of the new 24/7 opening laws? Well blow me down with a feather.

Since when did we have 24/7 opening?
Only difference ive seen is some pubs now open till 12pm and night Clubs till 3am.
We should have real 24 hour drinking.
I for example finish work at Midnight tonight.
What good is 2 or 3 am closing to me?
Abroad lots of people dont even go out till 11pm.

Wasn't there a big hoo-ha about a change in the licensing laws six months or so back? Labour changing them to 24/7 so we could all drink sensibly like the continentals or something?

I dunno. I don't do pubs anymore.

24/7 was always for the supermarkets. There is no point Sainsbury's or Tesco's supporting New Labour if they don't get something for it. The new licensing laws damaged the small licensees and the village halls who have to pay through the nose for licenses that were previously comparatively cheap. The licensing costs for Tescos and Sainsbury's get offset against their massive profits so they can sell incredibly cheap alcohol 24/7 (fiver for 8 cans of lager; same in a pub is 15 quid plus). It is the cheap supermarket booze bought by older teenagers and given to the young that is fuelling teen alcoholism. Most teens would get stopped in pubs where the licensee can be virtually bankrupted if he serves them; supermarkets just sack the staff member who sells the alcohol and carry on regardless.

Individual licensees cannot work 24/7; supermarkets have shift managers throughout the week. The individual who holds the license is rarely on the premises.

First they came for the Smoker, but I didn't speak out, because I don't smoke.

Then they came for the drinker, but I didn't speak out, because I don't drink.

Then they came for the motorist, but I didn't speak out, because I drive a smart car.

Then they came for me, but there was no one left to speak out for me.
