Default Top Tory says Scots may get chance to scrap Holyrood

Bill Walker, the former leading Scottish Conservative MP, has said that there could be a referendum in Scotland in which people will be offered the options of voting for both more power for the Scottish Parliament – and the choice of getting rid of it altogether (today’s Sunday Times reports).

When the referendum was held on establishing the Scottish Parliament – a slight majority of electors in Scotland either voted against it or did not vote at all - despite the campaign of the shameless europhile 'Tony' Bliar who used all the powers at his disposal to try to deceive voters and get people to back his shabby devolution plan.

The Sunday Times also reports today that the former presenter of the quiz ‘Mastermind’ Magnus Magnusson (who is of Icelandic origin) believes that ““In 20 years’ time I expect to see an independent Scotland.”

If they get rid of it all together they can darn well give back the 400 million pounds into the English coffers.

I hope they get a referendum and vote to scrap it. It has caused nothing but trouble and there is no real need for separate Parliaments. All we need to do is to get out of the EU and return those powers to Westminster and then we can start to rebuild ALL of Britain.

They are not going to vote against it while getting loads of perks at UK taxpayer expense - no top up fees, free social care for elderly, property improvement grants, etc.

Top Tory! It's a nonsense. The Scottish Parliament is now de facto! You can't undo what's done. A referendum would cost money that is best spent elsewhere.

Magnus Magnusson is still Icelandic.

If you can't undo in politics what is already done then what is the point of democracy or political parties? Surely, you would agree with me that Britain needs to get out of the EU even though that was 'done' thirty odd years ago? Yes, the Scottish Parliament and the Welsh Assembly can be scrapped if the people in both of those parts of the United Kingdom agree.

Personally, I think they should be scrapped. There are other ways to ensure that Wales's and Scotland's interests are not overlooked. One way would be for Britain to get out of the EU and then we can all start to rebuild Britain which being in the EU is preventing us from doing.

I'm not saying that you can't voice an opinion against the Scottish Parliament's existence. That is perfectly OK. But reality suggests that it is a waste of time, especially for those of us in England. If there is a groundswell of opinion to support a referendum, then that's fine by me.

When and if Salmond has his independence referendum he could be persuaded to tack on an abolition question!

Not saying the Scots would never vote against Holyrood, simply that at the moment it's unlikely because of subsidy from England.

And as things stand if the UK government cut that subsidy the EU would step in with 'funds' to seek to maintain Scottish feeling of separateness.

I agree with that being a probable action of the EU. After all, the devolution which has already occured has come about with the full support and promotion of the pro-EU lobby in this country and the EU Commission in Brusssels has certainly played a considerable role in promoting it too.  Too many people in Scotland and Wales were basically conned with these Parliaments. I hope the same mistake is not followed in England.
